Triton's TV Spot Has
Ray Scott "Speechless"

National Spokesman For Triton Boats
Say It All With One Word:
"Smooth..."

What does a good cup of coffee, a fast bass boat ride and the "BASS Boss" Ray Scott have in common?

The answer: "Smooth..."

That's the message and the only word uttered in the new 30 second television commercial being aired by Triton Boats on TV outdoor programs.

Scott, the founder of the Bass Anglers Sportsman Society (B.A.S.S.), is national Spokesman for the Ashland City, Tennessee based boat manufacturer. But, one word hardly a "spokesman" makes. However, the idea of the commercial is "how smooth a Triton bass boat hull rides" even to the point of not spilling a drop of coffee.

Ray Scott, director Don Wirth (with cue card) and producer Neal Hart, right, discuss the Triton TV “script.”  The final answer was edited to “Smooth.”

Taped at Percy Priest Lake near Nashville in the early-morning fog and mist, Scott is shown casting for bass, naturally. The only audio is the line leaving the reel, the buzz bait on retrieve and surrounding nat sound (read that "natural").

Taking in the setting, Scott takes a sip of his morning coffee and sets the Triton-emblazoned logo coffee cup on the deck.

The scene dissolves to Scott piloting the TR-21 Triton with 225 horses across the lake. Cut to a close-up of the "Triton coffee cup" on the forward deck and notice how smooth it rides. The audio track is filled only with Mercury outboard motor sounds as the boat slows down. To this point Scott's narration is nil.

Cut to a close-up of Ray with his Triton coffee cup in hand. He finally speaks, following a long slurp of coffee: "Smooth", he says to the camera.

"The TV spot says it all with a single line," opines director Don Wirth of Nashville, creator of "Harry 'n Charlie," the long-running fictional bassin' characters in BASSMASTER Magazine.

Well, maybe so. Folks tend to mimic certain phrases. As noted most recently: "Is that your final answer?", etc. ala, the Want to be a Millionaire TV quiz program.

signature voicer. Even though a national spokesman seemingly would say more than a one word script. But the message is to the point: Triton Boats designed by Earl Bentz are smooth, high-performance hulls.

Neal Hart, vice president of marketing for Triton Boats, and Don Wirth developed the commercial concept. Yep, over a "cup of coffee at the plant," acknowledges Hart.

"Among bass tournament pros, Triton has the best reputation for a smooth ride in any conditions. That's the message we want viewers to associate with riding in a Triton," declares Hart.
